About the best summary of this year's operations is at http://www.understandingwar.org/. It's kind of right wing but the author's credentials are very good and, aside from consistently painting everything as rosy, the summaries are good.

I think it is safer in the broad area around Baghdad,some of Anbar further west, and, of course, in Kurd territory. As long as the current ops continue, the zone of (relative) security should expand outward to the northeast (Dyala) and a little to the south. Problems will remain in Basra Province and up to within about 40 miles south of Baghdad, much of the western part of Iraq (especially along the infiltration routes from Syria), and much of the areas bordering Iran. The north just outside of Kurd control is vital but I have no idea of how that is swinging. We have almost no troops there but we apparently left it in a somewhat stable state. We'll see.

Hey there! Iraqi friends of mine that I still correspond with from time to time tell me that Baghdad is noticeably safer now.

Problem is, the Army doesn't have the troops to make the surge last forever, and there's no way Congress is going to bring back the draft.

Also, height of the Summer is a difficult time for insurgents too, so attacks often wind down around this time. I am not too hopeful for the future, unless they successfully try some new strategies here aside from simply more troops.
